Band Of Mission Indians Of San Gabriel - The Tongva occupied the

Laguna Beach, from the San Gabriel mountains to the sea, we lived
throughout most of what is now Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The
existence of our people on these ancestral lands has been unbroken
since long before the first contact between the Tongva and Europeans.
Our ancestors were the people who rowed our remarkable Ti'ats (plank
canoes) out to meet the explorer Cabrillo in 1542 off what is now San
Pedro.
"Tongva" means 'people of the earth'.
The
Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indian's region stretches from

Reasons
to Love LA
Only
in Los Angeles can you laze on the beach at Malibu or ski in the
Sierra
Mountains on the same day. Now, I’m a Valley Girl, so I used to
ice skate at the mall, you know? Ah, but I love tequitos down on
Olvera Street. The clack of wood Mah Jong tiles being played
upstairs in old Chinatown. I love the dark smell of the La Brea
tar pits. And you can stand in the middle of Farmers Market on
Fairfax and hear 10 different languages spoken all around you.
And most of the time you can tell what they’re saying anyway.
I live in an area where Arabs and Jews peacefully
live next door to
each other and Tibetan monks dressed in the colors of the sun wait in
line with me at the Post Office. You can walk down a strip mall
and order a Thai iced tea to go with your Greek salad - both made with
grandma's secret recipe from back home. There's
sacred
white sage smudged at Pow Wows, and the Chief will bless you even if
you’re white.
It is our diversity that makes us strong, creative
and alive. I
love this city. Drop by if you’re in the
neighborhood and we'll
share it with you.
